Galant Restore Help!!!!

Post by conan231 »

Ok so im currently restoring a mustard 1976 Galant
everything is going great just can anyone tell me

what is the Galant insignia on the grill on the front of the gallant
made of the orange one that has the horse in the middle

i tried washing it the other day because it was covered in dust and
looked like the material was dehydrated and cracked so I washed it with
water but half an hour later it had turned completely cloud white

Welcome to the forum.

Buy a NOS (new old stock one), contact this member AFC3S.
He's good to deal with, and may just be able to help you out.

Got any pics of your Mustard coloured GD?

AFC3S has quite often come up with NOS stuff, that is why I suggested him. Anyone else in Australia will only be able to sell you a second hand one, which is probably no better then the one you already have.

I think it's some type of resin?

If you're feeling brave you might be able to gently pick out the coloured resin from the badge. Underneath it should be chromed plastic with a wave sort of patern.
I did this with the side vents on my coupe, partly because chunks of the resin had fallen out already. I left mine chrome (which looks surprisingly good) but you can paint over them with transparent paint. I used a red model paint on the badges on the guards (a Tamiya clear red that's kinda fading off now) and over the chrome it really pops.

Of course NOS parts would look best but its a good option if you're feeling game.

You can polish the resin to return it to some resemblance of restored. Get your hands on a tube of Autosol metal polish and a soft cloth, cotton buds and tissue paper and have a go at buffing it out (it will freshen up the plastic chrome a bit too in the process). It's obviously not going to remove the surface crazing but will remove the oxidised layer on top and bring back the colour. I do have another solution but it is a bit of messing around. There is a 2 part resin you can get from craft shops that when mixed becomes a hard clear resin. Gently chip out the old resin, then mix the 2 part stuff and add the pigment from an indicator/tail light repair kit from an auto shop. I haven't done it but I think it would work.

If you want to restore the existing badge, do a google search for "ALDAX". They supply moulding and casting products and have a on-line shop.
They have a casting resin called crystal clear (I think) and also have the transparent pigments to colour it.
I was going to try it to cast some light lens'.
I am not affiliated with them in any way though I have bought products from them before and had no problems with the on-line purchases.

I've also done the picking-out of the resin on my side plates on the rear-pillar of my 4-door. The chrome underneath does look surprisingly good! It's a bit of mucking about to get it all out, but can be a good alternative to more resin/paint. The front one does look good in Orange though (and as my car's orange, that's staying!). I might look into the resin for that one though... thanks for the tips!

Good luck!
