Any ideas how to strip the paint from the grille without melting it with paint strippers?

I would rather do it myself if I can. The grille was on a hardtop drag car and was painted matt black with no prep work so it's pretty messy. It's a good grille just the paint is messy

yeh mine had been some in similar fashion. mine was all flaky and had runs in it from someone spraying crap with a can without prep. im not sure on removing paint safely without scratching it. but for painting the car shops sell plastic primer in a can that works if done patiently.

I think I'll pressure clean it. Get really fine wet sand paper and rub it down... Then prime it like I did the tail lights....
Then got to find a color that suits. I think the gun metal might be to dark for the grille

First step, thoroughly clean it with detergent. Second, wipe it over thoroughly with methylated spirits or prepsol and a clean cotton rag. Wet and dry it with 800 grit, give it a good rinse and either dry it with cotton cloth or use compressed air (a compressor with a trap in the line so you don't contaminate your grill) A good gunmetal finished paint I would try to get my hands on would be 1990 suzuki epoxy grey paint used on engine/gearbox covers(it's kind of expensive now, but you should be able to get it through a bike shop). No need to undercoat, give it a few coats and it'll look good. It dries to a semi gloss so it won't look rediculous and is pretty tough.
