just wanting to know how strong the gb galant diff is im thinking of entering it in burnout comps or is there any simple up grades that wont cost a fortune dosnt matter if it is a bit wider as i can flare the gaurds a bit.or if there are any other axels that will fit as it will be welded and the axels are bound to snap. cheers

i snapped 6 axles.. with a 2 litre engine a five speed and gb diff only broke one diff, though it was a cig (or boc) locker:(....it was axle tramp that really added to them breaking!

i only broke a pair of axels with my LA diff locked, was running a hot 2.6 5sp, tey arent too bad if u can eliminate the axel tramp

I understand (but can't guarantee, as haven't measured them) that GB wagons have thicker axles than sedans

I dunno what has what?? my ga had skinny toothpick axles...but gb sedan i wrecked had bigger ones?? there now whats in my ga... + the diff centre to suit them , axel tramp definitely twists and loads diffs!!

GA rear ends are different again (smaller) .... t& the diffs are made of cheese, which is a pity, as the early (auto?) wagons had a 4.3:1 diff in them.
GB wagons also have larger rear drums than sedans (9" vs 8" diameter).
When I pull the rear ends out of the 2 wrecks I have - which both have wagon rears - I'll measure them up.

thanks for the replys havent done any burnouts yet but how do you get rid of the axel tramp in the gb also is there any other diffs that will fit that are not so rare like a newer corrolas or somthing as there is no gb galants in adelaide that i can find or a pintara diff

when i changed the engine i noticed the gearbox mount was relly soft if i solid mount the box and engine would this stop the axel tramp? how much wider is a sigma wagon diff as when the 2.6 has had it i might even go 6cyl and i highly doubt the diff will hold.

Why would you want to do burnouts anyway ? All it achieves is putting unnecessary stress on the driveline & wearing out tyres ..... call me old fashioned if you will, but personally I can't see the point

Cheaper fix, is remove traction until the wheels are spinning fast enough.
A pair of windscreen washer bottles/pumps filled with water aimed at each wheel should do it, and probably cost less then $20.
I'd suggest oil, but it's probably not allowed?
Galant's don't axle tramp once you get the wheel up to speed (well they haven't for me anyway, not that I'm a burnout king or anything?)

Another cheap fix for axle tramp is buy a Sigma or Scorpion to do it with, as they don't have leaf rear ends.

ahhh dave?? burnouts are a hard one to explain why they appeal..........i personally just love em!...
burnout pads tend to be really grippy, my ga axle tramped big time on a pad...on street...smoked no probs with minor tramp... ive got an extra leaf (3 all up) and spring clamps added too! im considering making up traction rods...similar to a caltrac sort of thing

If you really want to eliminate the "problem", convert it to a 5-link setup with turrets, coil-overs & "slipper" springs a la Escort RS ...... or get a car with a more suitable suspension design for what you are trying to do !

If you can stop the
This will cause other major handling problems.
Using a "ladder bar" connected to the BOTTOM of the axle housing will do the most good with the least amount of work.
Basically it stops the diff housing from rotating when you put your foot on the throttle.
The front (tailshaft side) of the diff wants to tilt up when under load. This is what causes the leaf springs to go into the "S" shape.
By putting the bar on the bottom of the diff, it actually helps straighten out the spring when it's under load.

flipped leafs arent everyones cup of tea, but for some 'fun' sideways handling they are ok ha. it stops the spring trying to wind up, this is not talk but actual fact from my own personal experience in my lancer. but i would rather see some proper axel tramp rods setup off the top of the diff housing and proper stron mounting points for them on the floor pan.

and every car is a bit different in its axle tramp behavior due to tyres, spring number, spring height shocker position etc etc! some have easy fixes some are just nuisances!

i will see how she goes when my extractors come if the axel tramp is to bad might just have to get somthing else.i was going to make this my daily driver but needs to much body work to look half desent as im an engine person not a body builder

Not exactly sure if this is the right place not used to forums but I am looking for either a diff center or complete diff for a 1972 GA galant. Anyone know what will fit that is similar or stronger and what ratio diff can standard coz this one looks ancient thanks
