Are all Galant steering boxes the same?

Post by Rally_2.6LC »

Hey guys ive got a GC with some pretty chronic steering play, it hasnt gotten any worse for the 3 years ive owned it but ive recently bought a GB to use some parts from and was wondering if they are interchangeable (ie exactly the same).

Yes......All GA to GD steering boxes do interchange.

It is possible to adjust the free play, but if the box is at all rough in operation, the worm drive gears may be impact damaged. (Usually caused by whacking a gutter)

You will probably find the spare box also needs adjusting.

I did smack a gutter pretty hard 2 years ago (blew out a tyre too) but it had same amount of free play before then.
Would Lancer ones be the same???

with the road wheels in the straight ahead position 'rock' the steering wheel to estimate the free play.
if the free play exceeds 25mm, adjust the steering gear as follows:
1) raise the front of the vehicle and support it on stands
2) loosen the locknut and turn the adjusting screw on the steering gear clockwise untill the free play in the steering wheel is eliminated. tighten the locknut
3) move the steering wheel from lock to lock to ensure that the steering gear is not binding. readjust as neccessary, then lower the vehicle to the ground

Just caught up with this again, I meant "......worm drive BEARINGS (not gears) may be......."
