3.5L stroker kit? I want one

Post by DragonCypher »

As you will see there.. he has twin 45's and a 3.5L stroker in a 2.6 astron.
Reckons it makes about 200kw N/A

And for those with slow internet/cbf waiting :P

1m15s he gives details on engine
2m23s he stalls it  .. cold engine
2m56s (I think) he revs it a bit to show its true sound, before placing the camera infront of the 45's causing more static than engine noise

Enjoy, and please.. for the love of god.. buy me one of them strokers

Cheers,
Chris

i reckon he is full o'shit.

288 deg cam... will be lumping over very nicely... rolls off at 4500? Not likely, more like just gettin into it at 4500

three eight one quarter fuel line... interesting size..

anybody like to work out how long the stroke would have to be to pick an extra 900cc

You would need about a 135mm stroke.
It is possible with a different crank, shorter rods, custom pistons and grinding the bottom of the bore so the rods and crank don't hit it.

In my opinion, the engine wouldn't rev well but if it was turbo'd, it would be good.

Cheers.

Thats pretty much what I was thinking, would be good to increase the torque by about 30% straight up, but would need a bit of a push to get it revving.
Considering turbos usually work better from higher rpm I'd say a decent sized supercharger would make things interesting

Also..

Lilydale engines dont have a website or email, and I'm not one to make long distance phone calls frequently.. But if anyone is near by I'd like to hear more about where they reckon it came from.

Wonder if he has an pictures from the build... if your doing that you would sure as hell have pictures... even if you had to buy a camera

3.5ltr stroker kit & 200rwkw NO WAY
to make a 3.5 with as he says 0.020" up pistons would need 132 mm stroke thats 34 mm more that std - dont think so !
the 288 cam should not be to lumpy is farly mild even on a 2.6 I'm running 300 deg and its not that lumpy and even with some light weight bits - crank/flywheel it still idles under 1200 rpm
as for 200 Kw my guess is 1/2 that ,I would dout a dyno would show more than a 100 Kw ( in fact dont know if it would even make that )
with an astron 1 head - small cam and the 45 mm webers that wouldn't be big enough to breath that much

I'm only going on what I have got out of these things myself
I haven't stroked one but getting enough flow would be this guys problem it would be bad enough as a 2.6 but a 3.5 would be choked up bad
to make just short of 120 Kw atw ( 119.5 ) @ 6100 rpm
cam was 296 deg inlet and 310 deg ex
ported magna head 11.2:1 comp
polished crank with scraper
custom 4 into 1
light flywheel
and of cause the 45 mm webers with custom 41 mm chokes

I'm hoping to make 135 Kw atw with the new build
with a 317 deg cam
13 : 1 comp and changing to a ported M8 head
knife edge crank + scaper
50 mm quad TBs ( I've pulled them out and blown the dust off them )
lighter flywheel/clutch

200 Kw atw no way ! Busted !

anyway thats my reason for also thinking he's full of sh!t

well I got though it seems that I was the third guy to do so
they dont Know anything about a stroker crank for 4g54s

I remember old colt from the US talking about offset grinding the pins to 48 mm and getting 5 mm more stroke and using carillo rods
but that would make even with a 0.060" over size about 2775 cc

even if you could get the size no astron head is capable and your restricted
by lack of lift

anyone know of any 6.5" long rods with a 18mm diameter bigend or do i just turn the std rods upside down

So that would be a combination of stroked and bored to reach ~2.95, yes?

Because I've seen a few with standard stroke bored out to ~2.8

So its still possible to get some decent displacement figures.. even if 3.5 from a stroker isn't possible

I just love the thought of a 4cyl engine topping 3L

LPGALANT wrote:ive strked mine to 2.95 approx and if i was na around 3.05. rpw does them, he offset ground my crank and welded it up to do that, with a larger cp forged piston, not sure on size as everythings at the engine builder, they might be 94 or 95 mm
with a 94 mm piston and 106 mm stroke gives you 2942 and a 95 mm bore x 106 = 3005

so there is a fair chance that they have offset the stroke to 106 and 8 mm over std is about all the room you would have to play with inside the crank case
and for a turbo they have left a bit more meat in the bores

thats my guess
keep us posted on the results

not bad cheater your pretty much dead on
94mm bore with mahle piston out of VW
108 stroke with 48mm bearing clevite 77 make um
brings you out to 2997cc
yes you have to more than tickle one side off crank case

and from experance welded cranks dont like more than 9 to 1 comp
no turbo no gas and no alcohol

But thats where all the fun is meant to be..

Not worth it without a big charger to get it revving quickly, not for drags anyway

Would probably still be good for a streeter

LPGALANT wrote: what r u on about from experience dude, u must be talkin about something else, because there are thousands of engines around the world that r offset ground and welded cranks thatrr all of the above that u mention and r all fine.
engine machine shops can even welded scored cranks and re machine it without any dramas.

what have u stroked before
welding as a rule is never a recomended practice it can change the core structure
and the heat effected area could be a stress point

that being said you are right many cranks have been welded for repair or stroking
I some time ago had to weld the big ends up on a 1200 datson crank not to stroke it
but so the guys could fit rods that were narrower - so worse than building up one side
these got welded right around the pin both sides on all four crank pins
this crank was ground and lightened . then run in a mini sprint car for a season and a half
spinning to 10K it ended up braking a rod and the crank athough a bit knocked around
was still in one bit with no damage due to the welding ( something I would not have bet on )
this engine ran methanol - with high comps of cause

worse than the crank on that thing was decking the block 12.7 mm that another story

keep us posted on how it goes

well the car is team APM top alcohol dragster
we build the engines for this team and have since we started our company a
couple of years ago also doing engines for multiple v8 supercar teams and i work
full time for one of those teams anyway
Aaron Hambridge drives and we all ready hold the national record but that was the
old engine 572ci
the new engine is completly designed and built in house using a 471ci HEMI
the heads and top end are all custom made by us and when we tested this
new set up on boxing day last year we ran that time but give us some time
and we will get back up to speed
