blowing smoke

Post by boogernissan »

when i give my trusty old gn wagon some stick, she blows a bit of smoke out the back,i think its only fuel smoke as its only when i got it held flat,

whats a good basis for the mixture needle on the old 2.6 astrons?
she idles a touch rough and blows black smoke at idle, the choke plate has been removed aswell, not by me either,

im gonna do a comp test aswell to check the healthiness of my motor, oil pressure is good also

Gn's are loaded up with so much polution gear, that you would need to be a rocket scientist to track any fuel related problem.

Try float level and make sure all the fixed jets are tight.

If its running rich, then it ain't getting enough air, check your air filter, or do a run with no filter at all & note the effect. If its still rich, then its a fuel problem.

Am I wrong, but isn't the air fuel mixture screw only adjust the mixture at idle?
Isn't the only way to change the mixture above idle to change the jet sizes?

If it has the original carby, I'd suggest that unless something is seriously wrong with the carb, then your smoke is probably worn rings.

I've always understood smoke to happen in these circumstances:
Smoke on acceleration is rings
Smoke on deacceleration is valve stems or the valve stem seals
