GDGalantlover's Unfortunate GE Sigma story...

Post by gdgalantlover »

Well, I'm not new to S-G.com. I've had 3 Galant's in the past and i own a 1971 Mitsubishi Colt Galant A53.

I found this 1978 GE Chrysler Sigma on gumtree. The car was located at Rhyndaston (10 mins out of Colebrok) in Tasmania. The Sigma looked clean, was all there and came with a swag of spares. The owner wanted $50 for it, so i brought it!

These are the photos off Gumtree

We was trying to get the Sigma going. It has no fuel pump and we had put fuel down the throat of the carbie to see if it will fire. I had to use 2 batteries and it fired up very nicely! Our next step was to gravity feed fuel from a 5L Jerry can and a hose from the roof to the carbie. We got the flow going but couldn't get the clamp tight enough so fuel had pissed everywhere. Dad went up into the shed to grab a smaller piece of hose to sleeve the bigger bit with. Dad came back to the car and must of bumped the jump leads, which possibly sparked the fuel. I heard him shout and I turned around too see my Sigma now up im violent flames. Dad rushed inside to grap the fire extinguisher to put what we could out but the fucker didn't work. I was pretty wild and confused so I ran inside to grab the keys to the sisters Corolla to move that as the fire was getting the Corolla, a couple of blokes on motorbikes stopped to watch the Sigma inferno, dad knew the car had to move as we could of nearly lots the house! The Sigma was pushed to the bottom of the driveway. I called 000 to get a fire truck here ASAP, It took a while to work through their bullshit call system, but then to have to spell out Euston for the lady on the phone to know where the fire is?
Our neighbour Tony brought his hose over to extinguish the blaze, we had the fire out before two fire trucks came here. Luckily the fire was in the engine bay!

The aftermarth...

I think it's the perfect base to learn panel beating/spray painting skills (if budget permits of course)

But with Ge's becoming more and more rare....I'd say the best thing to do is simply salvage absolutely everything u can from that car (from panels to trim clips), clean them up so they are usable again, and sell them to the people who could use them

Wont rebuild it. I pretty much brought it for the 4G52. My Galant's 4G32 isn't very healthy now and I need to do something about the brakes as it would fail an RWC easy as.... I may just throw the 4g52 in it with reconditioned GE Sigma front brakes. I don't have much cash but id rather spend it on car that isn't burnt and needs the help more...

I think that's sounds like a great idea! Just make sure the fire didn't cause much damage to the motor.

The GE went about two months ago now. Kept a heap of parts and made a good profit off it haha!
