what is this device?

Post by scooby491 »

hi guys, may be a noobish question but im new to the sigma world

I recently got a 1981 GH sigma, 2.6 astron engine, carb, mechanical pump.

what is the small canister/tank mounted in the engine bay? its definitely part of the fuel system. it has one line in (from the pump) and 2 lines out (to the carby). its leaking out of the top and im just wondering what it is and if its vital to run the car properly.

at this stage im looking at restoration btw.

any help would be great
thanks guys

That would be this gadget here - the fuel recirculation cannister. They were on a lot of the early Mitsubishis so getting one shouldn't be that hard. The other option is to replace the fuel pump with a dual outlet unit (it supplies fuel to both the fuel bowl and the accelerator enrichment pump on the side of the carby) Check the link here to verify this is what you're referring to-

It is similar in principal to a surge tank on an efi setup.

the link geezer posted was page 2 of a thread, all the good stuff was on page 1 :P the thing he is talking about is the fuel vapor separator canister.
I removed mine on my scorpion. The fuel pump on my scorp had three outlets so it was easy to re-jig , but i had an issue with vapor lock maybe once per summer.
I have heard of the siggy ones leaking because they have plastic tops (wtf mitsubishi) the one out of my gh scorp was all metal and never leaked. maybe source one if you are restoring to factory standard.

Ah, of course.
I looked at the link, read the link title, and then thought that he'd accidentally put up the wrong link or something?
Pfft, not seeing there was another page, that's a pretty noob thing to miss... :$

Meh, as long as it gets scooby491 the info they were after. Yeah, the plastic recirculation cannisters are scary but the metal ones run risk of rusting from the inside out - between a rock and a hard place...
