Idle too high?

Post by Haireman »

Just got the siggy started after new cam, water pump and other stuff. But even with the cable out and the idle screws off its still revving at 2000. Does anyone have a clue why?

Has the engine reached operating temp? Sometimes they need to have the accelerator pedal 'snapped' open to disengage the auto choke. How advanced is your timing? And are you using the factory Mikuni Solex carby? There's a couple of screws on them that will affect base idle rpm (fast idle speed screw, air/fuel mixture screw, secondary stop screw, the obvious idle stop screw...)

If still using original Mikuni/Sloex carby, your fast idle problem will be caused by the wax pellet being stuck in the cold position.

...if the carby is stock and hasn't been 'fixed' before (e.g. some monkey without a clue has taken a flat blade screwdriver to every adjustable screw on it 'til it ran - sort of  ) this could be the problem. When the auto choke on the Mikunis fail they leak a thick, brown wax all over that side of the carby.

Yeah, you could do that by simply removing the choke butterfly from the top of the primary venturi. Not great for cold weather starts but it will 'run'. As long as you don't drop the butterfly screws down into the carby...

Wax pellet rod may just be stuck in cold/retracted position...try spraying wd40 or similar lubricant onto rod to free it up.Also,as wax pellet is coolant temperature operated, check that hot coolant is actually reaching the wax pellet as the coolant entry point on wax pellet is very narrow and can easily be blocked by rust/corrosion.Remove the the rubber hose going to the wax pellet and make sure the water passage is not blocked. If the brown(could be any color by now)thermo wax has leaked out,wax pellet will need to be replaced.
