GE differences

Post by 13bsigma »

hey guys. what are the physical differences between the GE sigma ranges? like the SE or the GL.

i looked up that it says that the GL came with a 1.6 or 2.0L with 4 speed manual only. the tangr topper SE came with an automatic. mine has an auto, but wears a GL badge???

besides this engine/gearbox queery, what differences do they have in looks and options?

any pics showing differences woiuld be great

GE SE's had
- black rubber bumper strips added
- reclining rear seat
- chrome grill
- Leather option or velour trim with lumbar support

GE GL's had
- number plate backing panel (the panel that goes behind the rear number plate SE's had them too)

GE's were also available with an option of a 2.6. They came with factory 14 inch alloys (the ones the GH and GH Scorpion's had). I have seen multiple 2.6 GE's with my own eyes, all standard cars (with elderly owners), They may I have been a SE option only?

I have seen a 1.6 GE but not since 1989.

My dad owned a GE (not GL) sport pack. It was a 2.0.

That's all I can remember, I pretty sure the info above is correct. Does any of that help?

I am pretty sure the 1.6's had GALANT on the centre boot garnish not SIGMA like the others.

so mine being 3 speed auto and 2.0L was an option then?
valitank wrote:GL doesnt have a boot relase
my other GE had a boot release which i swapped over to this one :) does this mean the other one was an SE or could you option up for the boot release?
valitank wrote:SE has diffrent grill and bumperbars
my other GE has the same front grill and bumper i believe. . this is the main differences i was interested in as i cant seem to notice any?? i'm thinking of either chroming the grill or painting it white as i will have white wheels. . to kinda match things up a bit. but dont know if chrome will over do the front end or if white will look cheesy??? lucky i have the spare grill to test it out :)
75wagon wrote:black rubber bumper strips added
is this the strip accross the bumpers? the kinda ugly looking thing?

i'd love to get a reclining rear set, but the chances of me finding one in as good nick as my seats and the same trim are impossible. .

i also want to get retractable rear seatbelts. . can this be done?

thanks for the info guys :)

the GEs ran from ~oct 1977 until may 1979 and they made I think abt 95,000.
Initially they were available in 3 different price points 'medium', 'high' and 'premium'.
The medium had galant and sigma badges. The 1.6L Saturn with 4spd was the base model -however the 2L auto was optionable.
the 'high' was badged GL and the 1.85L astron with 4spd was the base model but could option 2L Astron with auto, 4 spd or 5spd.
the 'premium' was badged SE and all had 2L Astron with 5spd or auto.

the 'medium' and the 'high' looked very similar with honeycombe grill, no rubber strips on bumpers.
the 'Premium' or SE model had chrome slat grill, rubber strips on bumpers, passenger side door mirror, little indicator lamps on top of the fenders, hood ornament, often had chrysler style hub-caps and chrysler style seats. rear seats reclinable for sedans, reading lights in C-pillars, different roof console, chrysler-style SE badges on rear.

most options were available for GLs and SE except leather (SE only). The alloy wheels available early on were 13in cheviots.

late in the model life, the 2.6L astron became an option and the alloys were 14in as more commonly seen on GH models.

the reclining seats were all vinyl, i believe and the rear parcel tray was different to allow it to fold. The GEs never had retractable rear seat-belts. I'm pretty sure the next model GH were the same too.

Yes the black strip across. They are the same bumper, just with the black strip added.
Ugly? I actually like them.
13bsigma wrote:i'd love to get a reclining rear set, but the chances of me finding one in as good nick as my seats and the same trim are impossible. .
The reclining rear seat should be able to fit to a standard model. The rear parcel tray is the same, it just has an extra brace that would have to be removed so it would work. I'm sure more investigation would reveal, everything is there, I can't imagine them making different shells on the same production line.
As for colour, good luck there. What colour are you after anyway?

My Dad's 1980 GE sport pack had Galant on the centre garnish.
It was yellow, 2.0 4 speed and no radio at all, not even an AM radio :o

The recliner handle is located at the rear of the bottom seat dead in the middle. You'd know it if you saw it. I have heard of people who have owned them for 20 years and not known that the seat reclined

That colour would probably be the easiest to find I think...
Go searching, and good luck
You want the seat and the mechanism, pay attention to how it is fixed to the car, you'll need all the catches and whatever.

No between the seat belts where the top and bottom seat join. I'm not sure if it's in the bottom of the top part, or the back of the bottom, but it is in that area.
Someone who has one please post a pic?

The GE Sigma brochure located here will answer all the questions about what was/was not an option:

http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/main.php?g2_itemId=76792

and

http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/main.php ... &g2_page=2

Also, the GE was made from 1977 through to May 1980. Replaced by the GH in midway through May 1980.

Lastly, the parcel shelf depth is different in the Galant/GL to SE models. The SE parcel shelf is about 3 inches shallower to allow for the seat recline. Also it does not have the child anchorage points visible like on the GL parcel shelf.

Hey everyone,

Mine started life as the poverty-pack Galant, vinyl trim, no centre console (shifter straight through carpet), etc, but when I bought it in '91 it already had been swapped to a 2.0 l + Jap 5 speed.

Bought a GH SE (with green velour trim) one day for parts and stuck the whole interior into mine. Rear (velour) reclining seat requires no mods whatsoever, but you must have the matching parcel shelf (which has a narrow board and then vinyl which concertinas when seat folds back) and the c-pillar plastic covers which also hide the part of the shell which never gets seen in your standard seating arrangement. The rear set has a centre armrest which folds down and the lever to adjust the backrest is at its base.

While you're at it, the map reading lights in the c-pillars plug straight in - the holes and even the wires were just sitting there, even though mine was the povest of pov-pack models. :D

I can take some photos if you like.
Cheers,
Cam

Finally got around to some photos. :$
Will load them up later.
Image
The parcel shelf is half size and then there's a vinyl part that concertinas as the seat is reclined.

Image
Rear bench seat goes in favour of two high-backed buckets.

Image
Backrest attaches with one of these brackets each side. The bolt holes were already in there - just a straight swap.

Image
Lever in the middle (beneath the centre armrest) used to recline the rear backrest. It also screwed straight into existing holes.
