Question regarding structual welding

Post by GC75 »

Ok questions are as followed:

Where would i go to have a car cut, and re - welded using another vehicle?

Would it have to be engineered or done by one?

If so is there a cost?

Has anyone ever successfully registered a car, that had been in a front end collision only to fix it up using another car?

What shall i do bout the number on the strut? as it doesnt match up? get it re done? or?

get them to cut around the number, like cut out the strut tower as one and weld it bak in, surely you dont need a whole front end - if the number doesnt matchup just nik the c plates off that car n say it was that one originally - unless its a sedan

If you cut the front off, make sure you brace the new one before it's cut off the old car. You'd hate to weld it in warped.

They may look at all the factors in relation to, 'the new car' by this I mean they will want to know the chassis number, engine number axle number. So it will be a bit of a mix mach exercise, but it will account on their records for the two vehicles.
Would be best to get in contact with RTA, as helpfull as they are, and find out exactly what the process is. I am guessing it gets registered as a new car with those different parts.

Many cars ago, I owned a V8 Ford Fairmont ute. It was a Falcon ute rear half grafted onto to front half of a Fairmont sedan. The join was through the floor under the seats, and the top of the A pillars. It was already registered when I purchased it but the interesting thing was the compliance plate still said "sedan". I only kept it for 12 months as I got sick of repairing issues every week-end (typical Ford !!)

go to a panel beater, do not cut out the number and weld it back  its illegal!!!! and it will be obvious!!! , it might need a pulll and maybe rad support repair but from the photos posted its not a cut it off job
SEE AN EXPERT FOR CORRECT ADVICE!!!
GET AN EXPERT TO WELD ANYTHING STRUCTURAL!!! (ie not a dodgey backyard job)
anything less could result in death and not that it matters a lot refusal to register when inspected.

to be more exact:

Where would i go to have a car cut, and re - welded using another vehicle?

Panel beater! and Id bet most will say no thanks!

Would it have to be engineered or done by one?
no

If so is there a cost?

NOTHING in life is free!!! NOTHING!!

Has anyone ever successfully registered a car, that had been in a front end collision only to fix it up using another car?

sure but its maybe $3ks worth of work for a cut and shut type of operation, that would be with you supplying everthing , no engine in, and NO PAINT!

I once owned a VB Commodore that had a new rear section fitted just behind the centre door pillar.

Never had a clue that it was a repaired car until the bog over the welds on the sills started to lift. :$

I'm still going with what I said when I saw it.
Leave the rails alone.
Leave the strut towers alone.
Just replace the radiator support and front inners.
Make rust replacement sections for the plenum chamber drainage and while they are removed repair the inner side.

Does any one else agree with this?

Just make sure you weld some braces in to what is remaining as you do it so you don't warp it while you're welding it.....

How does that sound?

sounds good

and nah i dont wish to replace the numbers... if i had to use the struts id somehow take the bit that goes over the actual tower and exchange it.
