Jordan Diff thread questions :P
I think i should make a thread thats just about diffs that i can continously add to i ask about this stuff so much
Speaking to a bloke today who thinks if i get it modified a ford 9in would work in my little GC but i think itd be too heavy and wouldnt move hahah

I had a 9" in the Scorpion wagon......worst investment ever.
Stick to either the skyline Borgwarner or the EX Lancer/Scorpion diffs....
Far more suitable for your application

Yep, unless you are consistently cruel to it or are making over 250hp a R31 BW or Scorpion 10 bolt will give you no trouble.
What will break a diff is load and lots of it and in a 900kg car with very limited tyre width available you are more likely to battle lack of traction than have enough to damage the diff

Put it this way......you can jump on ur feet all day long and your legs will handle that load......jump off the roof of your house and ur legs will break very quickly

A 70's Hilux diff would be your best bet, as there are too many different types of heads to list. Still a bit of work to get it in and a slight overkill I suppose

A Scorpion diff would be o.k. but the increase in track might be a problem. At least you'll get a disc brake rear end in the deal...

a rarity.....but an EX Lancer diff may fitt....they are shorter in length

EX Lancer and Scorpion 10 bolt is the exact same housing. Only difference between the two is that the EX got the same vented rotors as a Starion and had a LS option.
Depending on the width/offset wheels you want to run the Scorpion diff will tuck under a GC/D. Mine is stock width and I am running 10mm spacers and the turbos don't scrub at all.

The big thing that concerns me most are these LSD that you put in there Cone style LSDs or Plate Lsd ? On the mere fact the plated LSD doesnt go lazy

early hilux or cut down bw78 will cope with what you have
Im running a Ef xr6 bw78 in my gh and my engine making reasonable power though I will be swapping to a 9" later on to have that extra insurance and to lose some weight

I have a 9 inch with billet axles in my galant. It's nice knowing I never have to worry about it. They aren't much bigger than a borg warner in physical size so that is not really a reason not to get one. In addition, you can get fabricated housings rather than a ford one and aluminium centres whcih make them luch lighter these days.
Skyline Borgwarner LSD's are junk. I have an r31 sillhouette (and 2 other skylines at the present) and it's dubious even behind the original motor. The axles are huge but the centres are clunky and the LSD's don't last. You won't break one but they will become whiny and have heaps of backlash. Even rebuilt ones will only last 6 months of hard driving before they open up.
I would go Hilux. Get a 70's model for the width and chuck a 4 pinion LSD centre from a newer model.
Or buy a complete late model diff with disc brakes and get it shortened. You need this if you are going to abuse it.
I had an 11 Second LA lancer with a 13b turbo and standard LC lancer diff. You can make anything last if you drive it right.

If you are good with fabrication you'll save yourself a weeks pay by not having to pay someone to shorten the housing

Yeah a fabricated 9 inch, billet axles, alloy centre etc will be a fair bit.
A normal 9 inch with billets and cut down to your width will be about $3k I reckon. Depends what you start with, what type of centre, etc.
Shop around, a borg warner/hilux conversion won't be that much cheaper.

The first 9" in my Cortina used a Ford housing Ford centre with Richmond gears, strange full spool/bearings and billet axles
cost $1800 but I built it
The BorgWarner in my GH cost $320 to buy cut down and install, the new alloy modular 9" im building will suit 1200hp (more than I will ever have) and will be around $2000

Is it true that you can 'tighten up' the 3.30 rati Scorpion centre????
I know there's no 3.30 LSD......but i have seen a few items on ebay that cmailm it can be an LSD centre...or at least tighten up the centre

you ever thought of maybe looking at a rear IRS from a starion? bit more to spend but at least then you could buy a factory lsd.. they're meant to handle a fair bit in standard form.

And then have to do a custom cradle and strut tower setup... Might end up cheaper going a 4 link rear and a 9"
