The BW in my Cortina had a strap made from tin holding the gear stick into the box, held in with a self tapping screw either side of the ball housing.

Go for it man. I had ghastly spiders that kept jumping on me at inopportune moments while driving in my old Corty. I took most interior panels off, left the doors open a bit and draped a tarp over the car. Then let one of those time bomb thingo's off and left it for days... 8o| 8o| Killed the spider...

If you choose to use fish oil, use the deoderised one. Trust me..
I've used fish oil on alot of previous cars. Tectril (spl) is another option.
There is quite a few others. Lanolin comes to mind.
