Re: Astron billet cylinder head

That's one way to deal with coolant corrosion problems...

I very, very vaguely know Paul from a previous life. Beyond the quality of the workmanship, I'm impressed that he's stuck with the mission of making an old Galant hurtle down the drag strip quickly, for so long.

Re: Fast NA Saturn motor?

That sort of power would be fine. My benchmark is my piston-powered 808 which made 67kW ATW.

Now, to make things more difficult: What if I said that 1560cc was the absolute limit?

Fast NA Saturn motor?

Bench racing alert!

What sort of power have people gotten from their 'all motor' Saturns? No turbo, no blower, no "nawz".

I keep hearing about how the valve angle limits power...

Re: GC khanacross car.

Next is a diff and strut swap. Pete's dad did some odd things with the strut tubes - have a look at the welds on the lower legs... http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f128/annaandnathan/Galantism/IMG_1797_zps2c64739f.jpg (if anyone can positively identify the stubs, please let me know). Here's what's been done so far. Bog the rear quarter: http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f128/annaandnathan/Galantism/IMG_1785_zps562f43d7.jpg It looks pretty reasonable from the outside, but the (blurry) inside photo shows the real story: http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f128/annaandnathan/Galantis...

GC khanacross car.

Ugh - Where to begin this story? Let's go with the beginning... A million years ago, my good mate Petey and his dad bought a red GD sedan road car with a 2-litre Astron in it, as a 'do it all' club level motorsport car. The two of them used it for motorkhanas, khanacrosses, hillclimbs, lap-dashes an...

Original GC coupe.

So the story began a couple of years ago, when The Wife got a phone call: "You left a note under the windscreen of my mother's car a few years ago. It's a white Galant sedan. Do you still want to buy it?" The Wife had no memory of the car, but it sounded OK, so we drove to Goulburn with th...

- Site name: Spac2 - Location: Just outside of Canberra, NSW. - Car details: Car is 100% stock. Copped a reco motor sometime in the distant past, and a good respray in the original white also in the distant past. It is otherwise in excellent original condition, and will remain that way. Er, I forgo...

Re: Educate me on Astrons.

Excellent, thank you.

This leads to a few more questions:

Which of the later heads offers the best flow?
For a NA motor making around 100kW ATW, is there any reason to use an Astron1 block?
Can the later hydraulic rockers be converted to solid?

Educate me on Astrons.

I've read a lot, but not much of it makes sense, because it assumes I know the differences between Astron 1 and Astron 2 and the olther, later stuff.

Make it simple for a noob!

What are the important differences?
Is it worth chasing a late model motor for a fairly serious NA build? Why?

Long over-due update! There are a few photos missing because Photobucket has decided to reject about 40% of the photos I try to upload. :@ Made a new centre console: http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f128/annaandnathan/GArallyCar/IMG_1230_zps7bc5d330.jpg http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f128/annaan...

Re: 4G32 camshaft identification/specs.

To answer my own question again... It's got 1 stamped into the end of it... :(

This brings me to my next question:
Anyone know the specs of the stock cams? On closer inspection, this one looks like a regrind, but it would be good to know.

4G32 camshaft identification/specs.

Sorry if this has been asked a million times already, but the search function really struggles to help on this one...

I've got chain-drive 4G32 here from a rally car. There has been some suggestion that it has a Number5 cam in it.

How would I know?

Might have a set of 4.2s available, depending on what we do with the orange GC.

Answering my own question: Yes, the Commodore pads are the same as GH/Sigma II : DB1085.

Re: GA Rally car.

75glnt, The 4G32 is a big unknown. It's got a pair of 45mm DCOEs and a set of extractors on in, but that's all I know for sure. People who knew the donor car keep saying things like "I think it was a 1770" and "It might even have a #5 cam in it", but never anything definite. I'm ...

So... The Alpine rally is rapidly approaching and I've got three rally cars here that are variously broken, in pieces, or simply not finished - and no motivation to fix the one that's easiest to fix.... There's only one logical thing to do at a time like that: Buy another car! I searched obessively ...

Thanks.

Do these calipers use the same pads as early Commodore? Or does it just look like it?

Noob question: What's the difference between "green" and "non green" struts?
