Re: Need help from engine builders

They should also consider the phasing of the balance shafts. When I bought my Sigma it had a really bad vibe above 5000 rpm (so much that I never took it to redline), but all that went away when I replaced the timing chains and made sure I got the balance shafts right (first attempt, I had one out b...

Re: radiator hoses

FWIW, when I had a larger alternator fitted to my GB the auto-sparkies told me they needed to fit a Sigma lower hose to clear the alternator.

I had to add a protective sleeve to the Sigma hose to stop it wearing through on the alternator mounting bracket.

Interested, but I'm a commitment-phobe - especially 6 weeks out. I'll pencil it in, but a lot can happen in 6 weeks.

Re: GK Sigma SE Wagon

Thanks for the reply. On the dyno they were measuring the AFR (as plotted on the graph somewhere up the page) using a probe stuck up the exhaust pipe. I suppose it's possible that what's coming out the exhaust pipe doesn't match what's coming out of the cylinder, but I find it hard to imagine how ba...

Re: Sigma alternator wiring

Hi Chris I can't help by telling you about mine, as I had it replaced with a larger capacity unit. Somebody else did the work, so I don't know what (if anything) might have been changed. It looks like a fairly simple setup, with (I think) "internal" regulator (the black block on the left),...

Re: GK Sigma SE Wagon

Thanks slo I guess I simply want it to look like it's cared for. It gets dirt roads, so it's mudflaps or gravel rash, and it's a work-horse - the towbar gets used. One day, I might even find the intermittent fault in the trailer wiring. Anyway, today I replaced the cam with another I had lying aroun...

Re: Pajero 4d55 diesel to 2.6 astron

Most important one is diff(s) ratio. The diesel is governed at 4000rpm (from memory) so you will find it is mated to higher ratios. i.e. Your Pajero will be a slug. Certainly important to consider, but in this instance, he's more likely to have low (numerically higher) ratios than high. 2.3 TD = 4....

What is it with all unidentified old-skool japanese cars being "dattos"?

I had somebody (my age) call my Sigma a "datto" last year. WTF?

just make sure you get the GE 1.6l struts  Makes no difference ... and we are not talking a strut change, only an insert (ie. remove guts of standard strut & drop in the insert). Galant & GE Sigma are the same insert. Only difference, from memory, is the Sigma uses a slightly diff...

For what it's worth:

I first put Konis into my Galant when it had GC struts in the front. The same inserts went into GH struts when I had them fitted to the Galant.

After the Galant died the Konis were re-built, and are now in the front of my GK.

Re: 4g32GS ?

Yes, that does explain it very well. It explains that this is wrong: These colder plugs will keep combustion temp down to overcome the tendency to ping. You have cause and effect mixed up. Pinging causes elevated combustion temperatures; the pinging is caused by the spark plug becoming too hot. If t...

Re: 4g33/32 power

61kW at the flywheel.

My GB had a 4G32 with 4G35S pistons, balanced bottom end, shaved & ported head, cam, extractors, exhaust & Weber, and dynoed 92hp at the wheels. That would teach RX3s & RX4s a lesson, and keep VNs / EAs honest.

A stock 4G32 wasn't putting 61kW to the road.

Re: 4g33/32 power

To put that into perspective, the GJ Scorpion manual puts the 2.6 at 104hp, or 78kw, at around 5500rpm 4G54 astron making 76kW @4800rpm and a torque of 192.1Nm@2400rpm Woops' figure is the one I'm used to seeing for Sigma - note the difference in rpm between Sigma and Scorpion. 4800 vs 5500. Re: 4g33/32 power

30 years ago, most Aus sources quoted 76kW at 6300 rpm for the 4G32. I believe that the "industry approved' way to measure that power has changed, so it would be less today.

Yes, I do. They even have tyres on them, although they're only just legal. 195/60, IIRC.

They've spent some time outside, so they're not too clean anymore.

If it's the original imported engine it may have flat-top pistons, so you might be able to increase compression simply by fitting a Sigma Astron 1 head. Personally, I like the sound of twin DCOEs, but they can take some tuning. I don't know much about the Holleys. Are you sure you have hydraulic tap...

That would be the logical move.

I suppose if you're desperate, and can't afford/find larger carbs, you might just bore the venturis.

But it is a little odd that somebody bothered to provide a figure for it.

The tuning book I have (had? somewhere?) advises that DCOE choke (venturi) diameter should be 0.7 to 0.9 times the barrel diameter. On this basis, a 36mm choke would be the maximum advisable, but there's nothing to stop somebody machining them out to larger. I guess you would go larger to improve to...

The rated voltage also affects the capacitance, ie: if a cap is rated at 100u at 100v, at 10v it will probably be around 60u. Do you have a link to this information? AFAIK, capacitance is a combination of physical construction and materials. The voltage rating indicates the maximum voltage the capa...
