Have you done the really simple thing and checked the globes?

I think Davetrees is on the money with the pump needing priming........ Cheap pumps in particlar will not suck, only push. If the mounting of the pump is higher than the tank you may need to locate it lower so the fuel will syphon to the pump

Nah mate just a std H4 kit. As far as using a patch harness it just means more plugs/wiring to try and cram in behind headlight because of the 5 pin plug that goes into the headlight then the H4 plug inside the light.
